Paul Eagle first Maori to be deputy mayor of wellington

Wellington has its first Maori Deputy Mayor after Paul Eagle was formerly sworn into office today. Mayor, Justin Lester, had announced that Eagle would be his deputy and noted that he would fill the role until the City’s inauguration ceremony on October 26th. Eagle has iwi affiliations to Waikato Tainui and Ngati Tipa and Ngati Naho and has represented the Southern Ward since 2010.
Eagle said that "I acknowledge the responsibility that comes with the role and will work tirelessly to fulfil that responsibility."
